More Than Cosmetic — It's a Liability Issue
Uneven sidewalks are more than an eyesore. In Northeast Ohio, tree roots, settling soil, and freeze-thaw cycles cause concrete slabs to lift, sink, and crack — creating dangerous trip hazards that expose homeowners to real legal liability. Many municipalities in our area actively issue citations and hold property owners responsible for maintaining the public sidewalk in front of their home.
Gaetano Cement Contractors removes the old, damaged concrete down to the source of the problem — cutting back roots, correcting drainage, and compacting fresh aggregate base before a single drop of concrete is poured. The result is a level, code-compliant sidewalk that handles Ohio winters without the recurring failures of a patch job.
Many cities — including Chagrin Falls, Solon, and Beachwood — require homeowners to maintain the public sidewalk adjacent to their property. Failure to repair a cited sidewalk can result in the city completing the work and billing the homeowner at a premium. We handle permits and inspections so you're fully covered.
Sidewalk & Walkway Services
City & Public Sidewalk Replacement
We replace municipally-cited and privately-requested public sidewalks to full code — proper width, slope, and ADA-compliant transitions. We manage the permitting process from start to inspection sign-off.
Front Entry & Front Door Walkways
Your front walkway is the first thing visitors see. We install clean, straight or gently curved paths from the street or driveway to your front door — making a strong first impression while eliminating trip hazards.
Garden & Backyard Walkways
Winding paths through your landscaping, pool surrounds, side-yard passages, and patio connections — we use flexible forms to create smooth organic curves that flow naturally with your property's layout.
ADA Accessible Pathways
We install handicap-accessible concrete paths meeting ADA slope requirements (max 1:12 grade), proper width standards (minimum 36"), and smooth transition surfaces for wheelchair and mobility aid access.
Built Right From the Ground Up
We apply the same engineering rigor to a 4-foot sidewalk as we do to a full driveway replacement. Here are the specifications on every installation.
| Component | Gaetano Specification |
|---|---|
| Concrete Mix | ★ Premium 4,000+ PSI Exterior Mix |
| Standard Width | 36"–48" residential / custom widths available |
| Slab Thickness | 4" standard / 6" at driveway apron transitions |
| Sub-Base | Compacted aggregate stone for drainage & stability |
| Finish Options | Non-slip broom finish, exposed aggregate, or stamped |
| Control Joints | Cut every 4–5 feet to direct and control cracking |
| Cross Slope | 2% max for drainage, ADA-compliant where required |
We Fix What Broke It, Not Just the Surface
The most common reason sidewalks fail is tree roots growing beneath the slab — pushing concrete upward until it cracks and creates a hazard. A patch over a living root buys you a year at best. We address the source.
During excavation we assess the root system and choose the right long-term approach for your specific situation, balancing preservation of mature trees with the need for a stable, lasting surface.
The Installation Process
Demolition & Root Excavation
We break out the existing concrete, remove all debris, and excavate to proper depth — cutting back or treating problem roots so the failure doesn't repeat. All demolition material is hauled to a certified recycling facility.
Gravel Base & Forming
We install a fresh compacted gravel sub-base for drainage, then set forms precisely — establishing the correct cross-slope for water runoff and the proper elevation for ADA compliance or matching adjacent grades.
Concrete Pour & Screeding
We pour the 4,000+ PSI exterior mix, screed it flat, and bull-float the surface to consolidate the concrete and eliminate voids. Apron connections are poured to 6" thickness for added durability at transition points.
Edging, Broom Finish & Control Joints
We edge all sides for a clean, professional look, apply a non-slip broom finish for year-round traction, and saw-cut control joints every 4–5 feet — directing any minor shrinkage cracking exactly where we intend it, not where it wants to go.
Cure, Seal & Cleanup
A curing compound is applied to ensure optimal concrete strength. Forms are removed, edges are backfilled cleanly, and the site is left in better shape than we found it. You can walk on the surface within 24–48 hours.
